Philosophical burn

There's something that keeps bothering me for a while now. We all live in this society where you can't really be you. People copy each other, so that they can be accepted by society. Yet most people think they are so different. They are not. But it bothers me that the people who really are different are seen as outcasts.

The society we live in is plain rotten. And the big problem is, you don't have a choice. I feel like I'm stuck in a system. No one has ever asked me if I wanted to be in this system; I just got thrown in. But does that make any difference? For example, what if I had a choice? What if you had a choice. What if we all could choose in what kind of society/system we can live in. Would it really be that different? Is it really the system we should blame? Or are we the cause of all of this?

Let's imagine we really can pick the system we live in. Would we really live our lives the way we want to? Or would we adjust ourselves, again, so we can be accepted by the society we want to belong to? If you think about it, it's a chicken-and-egg situation. And the only persons who are bothered by this, are the people realizing it.

A little while ago I believed it was unfair to live in a system you didn't get to choose. Until I studied the course Consumer Behaviour. Some experiments caught my attention. The ones which caught the most attention are the ones about conformity. Two psychologists have done experiments concerning conformity (Muzafer Sherif and Solomon Asch). Conformity is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs and behaviours to group norms (Wikipedia, 2012) People are made to adjust, to conform.

The reason why this caught my attention was because I always blamed the society for everything. But the fact is that we are the ones to blame. We conform and conform until we match with the norms of the society we live in. It's indeed a chicken-and-egg situation. This changed my view of things completely. I searched for the wrongs aspects to blame.

So in the end it doesn't matter if you have the ability to choose. Eventually you will conform until you match the standards of the society you want to live in. These are my thoughts about this. I like to discuss these kind of things with other people and share thoughts.

Therefore I'm interested in what you think about this.

  1. True! Other people don't really have their own identity. Other's do want to be like this, like that, and end up being a copy cat. Reality check! They should act normal and talk normal, and be confident about it. Because that's how they show their uniqueness. :)

    1. It's sad, isn't it? And I find it really funny that those people think they're so unique and so different. But how can you be unique when you're a copycat? Stop copying and start being yourself.

      Thanks for your comment :)

  2. Sad that people who want to be "original" are just plain copies of everyone else! Sickens me to see people wanting to copy others just for the sake of not being a bad different. We should all learn to take risks and be ourselves no matter!

I love your blog but I can't find the follow button anywhere! :-/ All I see at the top part is Share and not Follow. :-(

    1. It sickens me too. I can't understand how you want to be the same as everyone else so badly. Is it really that bad to be yourself? No. It makes you the unique individual you are. How can you be happy when you can't be yourself?

Thank you so much, really appreciate it! Maybe you should do it manually by copying the link of my blog (http://petitesal.blogspot.com/). Then go to dashboard and paste it there, where you can see who you're following.

Oh I'm so bad at giving directions, lolll. I hope you get it!

      xxxx.
